as JOHN PAUL JONES
Born on the 7th day of December in Des Plaines, Illinois.
Drawn to music and creative expression from a very young age, Brian spent most of his childhood days sketching on notebook paper, listening to his parents’ record collection, and watching classic movies. Everything changed when the family purchased a spinet piano for his older brother to learn. After weeks of picking out notes in an attempt to “shoot” the keys like his hero, Chico Marx, Brian jumped at the opportunity to take lessons after his brother lost interest.
In his early teen years, another pivotal moment occurred when his uncle, an incredibly talented guitarist, allowed Brian to check out his collection of guitars and amplifiers during a summer visit. The following summer, the family returned and attended an outdoor show featuring his uncle’s cover band. This would be Brian’s introduction to the world of electric rock. Watching his uncle command the audience with blistering riffs from tunes such as Eruption and Panama, Brian decided that as soon as the family returned to Texas, he would refocus his energy from the piano to learning the guitar. With the advent of alt-rock music in middle school and high school, and exposure to bands like Primus and Red Hot Chili Peppers, he soon found himself drawn to the electric bass instead.
While studying Music Education at Texas Tech, Brian was introduced to orchestral instrumentation and took a semester to learn the basics of the violin and viola. This brief but focused course gave him the foundational skills that would later prove useful learning the mandolin. After college, Brian returned to Dallas and spent several years performing with different bands on the DFW circuit, primarily on bass guitar. It was during this period when his love and appreciation for the music of Led Zeppelin took root, and after a few years away from the live music scene, he jumped at the opportunity to audition for Swan Song. His unashamed admiration for the multi-instrumentalist and unsung hero of the band, John Paul Jones, continues to push Brian to his limits on keys, bass guitar, and mandolin at each show.
Best thing about Swan Song: “The challenging nature of the music and the specialized skill set required to perform it live. JPJ’s style has had a major influence on me and I do my best to relay that to the audience with every performance.”
